The BG100 Speedgate, a collaborative project between HID and ASSA ABLOY, has been awarded a Red Dot: Product Design 2025 award in the interior design elements category. Designed to enhance airport passenger flow through seamless facial recognition and intuitive design, the BG100 has been recognised for its functionality, usability, and visual appeal.
The self-boarding eGate integrates HID’s Facepod facial recognition technology and document reader with ASSA ABLOY’s Speedgate mechanism. The system is tailored for high-throughput airport environments, supporting applications such as security checks, lounge access, immigration control and boarding. The biometric processing is touchless, and the design incorporates interactive LED guidance and a user-friendly touchscreen to help guide travellers.
According to HID, the Red Dot recognition highlights the company’s ongoing work in secure and user-centric identity verification. Vito Fabbrizio, VP of Product Management and Innovation at HID, noted the award underscores their commitment to improving biometric experiences in the aviation sector.
In terms of design, the BG100 Speedgate offers a modular structure with flexible colour and sizing options, allowing it to adapt to various airport aesthetics and layouts. It also includes anti-tailgating, wrong-way detection, and other embedded security measures. The development reflects what ASSA ABLOY describes as a “Moving by Design” philosophy — an approach that combines aesthetics with high-traffic security needs.
Robert Zimmerman, Head of Business Vertical Airports at ASSA ABLOY, said the accolade was a reflection of both companies’ collaborative focus on shaping the future of travel infrastructure.
The Red Dot Award: Product Design is one of the most established international design competitions, having run since 1955. Each year, an independent jury of experts evaluates thousands of entries based on quality of function, form, use and responsibility. The 2025 awards featured submissions from over 60 countries.
