ASIS International releases updated Investigations Standard with ANSI approval

by Geny Caloisi

ASIS International has released an updated version of its ANSI-approved Investigations Standard, offering clearer guidance on how organisations can plan, conduct and manage investigations in today’s high-stakes environments.

This revised edition is more than a routine update. It brings together best practices from a global team of security professionals and puts structure around what many organisations still tackle informally — from defining the scope of an investigation to handling sensitive information with care.

“The revised Investigations Standard is a valuable tool that any security team should have in their toolkit,” said Patrick Cooper, PCI, Chair of the Technical Committee. “It’s practical, adaptable, and built for professionals working across public and private sectors.”

The standard now covers everything from stakeholder responsibilities to the mechanics of running investigations and managing outcomes — all with a focus on consistency, accountability, and return on effort.

Sue Carioti, Vice President of Certification and Standards at ASIS, summed it up: “Great investigations don’t happen by accident. This standard helps teams work deliberately — with a clear plan, a defined process, and the ability to keep improving over time.”

ASIS says more standards are on the way in 2025, including upcoming guidance on Executive Protection and a new framework for School Security — the first of its kind.

The Investigations Standard is available now in eBook and print. Security professionals interested in contributing to future standards can reach out via [email protected].

The newly revised Standard can be found as an eBook here, or in print here
