ASIS International has launched the first American National Standards Institute (ANSI)-approved standard for K-12 school security, offering a comprehensive framework for assessing, implementing, and improving security across educational environments. The standard provides a scalable, evidence-based roadmap for schools of all sizes and funding levels.
Developed by a multi-disciplinary team of security professionals, school administrators, architects, mental health specialists, law enforcement, and emergency planners, the standard integrates physical security, behavioural threat assessment, and emergency operations planning. It enables schools to evaluate current security measures, identify risks, and implement actionable strategies for ongoing improvement.
Jeffrey Slotnick, Co-Chair of the ASIS School Security Standard Technical Committee, said: “This standard helps schools systematically address unique risks while keeping their focus on education. It is a proactive tool designed for practical application worldwide.” Drew Neckar, co-chair, added that the ANSI/ASIS standard provides “a scalable roadmap that fosters continuous improvement, guiding schools in creating stronger, more resilient learning environments.”
The newly released standard can be found as an eBook here or in print here.
