Intelligent Boarding Gates Installed at Chongqing Airport by Gunnebo

Gunnebo Entrance Control has delivered its intelligent boarding gate solution, BoardSec, to Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport’s Terminal 3, supporting a major digital upgrade at one of China’s busiest international gateways.

Chongqing, one of the world’s largest cities by population, saw over 40 million passengers pass through Jiangbei International Airport in 2024. In line with its wider smart airport strategy, the airport commissioned Gunnebo to supply more than 150 boarding gate systems to streamline passenger flow, increase security, and reduce manual intervention during boarding procedures.

The BoardSec system integrates facial recognition and behaviour detection technology to support efficient and secure self-boarding. Using a multi-camera array and deep learning, it can detect more than 20 types of anomalous behaviours, including tailgating, reversing, and unattended luggage. The system automatically triggers alerts when unusual patterns are identified, helping airport staff respond quickly while reducing reliance on manual checks.

Chongqing Airport reports that the new system has significantly improved operational efficiency and passenger experience. Boarding times have been reduced by up to 70%, with single-gate capacity increasing from 180 to 320 passengers per hour. The facial recognition component, which uses both visible light and near-infrared imaging, verifies identity in 0.3 seconds and remains effective even under challenging lighting or mask-wearing conditions.

To further optimise operations, Gunnebo has also provided an intelligent equipment management platform that monitors real-time system performance and passenger flow. The platform uses AI to automatically allocate additional gates during busy periods, while remote diagnostics streamline maintenance and reduce system downtime.

Davis Zhang, Vice-President China at Gunnebo Entrance Control, commented: “Our work in Chongqing reflects our broader commitment to supporting intelligent transformation across civil aviation. With advancements in 5G and edge computing, we’re focused on delivering high-performance, data-driven solutions that enhance both security and passenger satisfaction.”

Gunnebo Entrance Control systems are deployed in nearly 100 airports worldwide. The Chongqing installation is part of the company’s continued investment in AI-powered, automated infrastructure to meet the evolving demands of global transport hubs.
