March Networks Expands Partnership with Carleton University to Advance Generative AI Solutions

by Geny Caloisi

March Networks, a leader in intelligent video surveillance and AI-enabled business intelligence, has announced an expansion of its partnership with Carleton University to drive innovation in generative AI and support the growth of Ottawa’s technology talent pipeline.

Headquartered in Ottawa, March Networks provides intelligent video solutions to a broad range of sectors, including financial institutions, retailers, and transportation authorities. The company’s clients include some of the world’s most recognisable brands, such as Dunkin’ Donuts, Uniqlo, and transportation agencies in Los Angeles and the UK.

Through this expanded collaboration, March Networks aims to further develop its AI Smart Search technology, a solution that enables users to find critical events or objects in video footage using natural language commands or image uploads. By working with Carleton University’s research teams, March Networks plans to refine and test this technology, supporting customers’ evolving needs in security, operations, and risk management.

“This partnership with Carleton University represents the best of Canadian innovation—where academic research meets real-world industry needs,” said Peter Strom, President and CEO of March Networks. “Together, we’re not just exploring the potential of generative AI in video analytics; we’re setting a new standard for how it’s tested, measured, and improved.”

As part of the collaboration, Carleton Assistant Professor Nafiseh Kahani is leading the development of an automated testing framework for AI Smart Search. The goal is to create simulations and data generation tools that mirror real-world complexities, helping to validate the system’s accuracy and reliability. “This proactive approach is essential for delivering solutions that users can trust,” Kahani said.

March Networks is also investing in the next generation of technology talent by expanding its philanthropic support at Carleton University. Since 2017, the company has funded scholarships in Software Engineering. This support has now been extended to students in Computer Science and Marketing, broadening opportunities for aspiring professionals across disciplines.

The company continues its commitment to diversity in technology by sponsoring Carleton’s Women in Engineering and IT Program (WiE&IT), an initiative designed to inspire and support women pursuing careers in engineering and technology.

The expanded partnership comes as March Networks celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025. Founded by Sir Terry Matthews in 2000, the company has grown from its roots in Ottawa’s tech ecosystem to become a global leader in intelligent video solutions.

March Networks’ collaboration with Carleton University highlights its commitment to innovation and industry-academic partnerships. By combining research expertise with practical business applications, March Networks is developing solutions that address real-world challenges and support its global customer base.
