Reliance High-Tech’s Chief Technology Officer, Andy Schofield, has been appointed chair of the British Security Industry Association (BSIA) AI and Biometrics Special Interest Group (SIG). The BSIA, a key trade association in the UK’s professional security industry, supports excellence by facilitating various Special Interest Groups to tackle emerging sector-specific challenges.
The AI and Biometrics SIG, launched in 2020, is a leading initiative aimed at fostering confidence in the safe, ethical, and effective application of artificial intelligence and biometric technologies within security. By developing best-practice guides and standards, the group sets the tone for responsible adoption of these advanced technologies. Its efforts have already yielded significant results, including contributing to the creation of the first-ever British Standard for the ethical use of facial recognition in video surveillance—BS 9347:2024.
The group’s focus is to guide the industry through a rapidly evolving landscape by ensuring compliance with new regulatory measures like the AI Act and by aligning with industry expectations on data protection and ethical considerations. “I am honoured to accept the appointment as Chair of the BSIA’s Special Interest Group on AI and Biometrics,” said Schofield. “This group is pivotal in shaping the future of the security industry, as AI and biometrics hold immense potential for advancing security solutions.”
Schofield’s experience spans over 30 years, having been part of Reliance High-Tech’s senior management since 2014. He has been instrumental in the company’s development of leading AI solutions that differentiate it in the marketplace. His expertise and strategic vision are expected to guide the SIG as it navigates complex regulatory challenges and technological advancements, ensuring that the UK continues to set global standards in this space.
The group’s membership includes a mix of security and technology professionals, including manufacturers, integrators, and installers, and works closely with stakeholders such as academia and government bodies. This collaborative model aims to drive thoughtful discussions on emerging technologies and ethical issues, ensuring that the sector’s adoption of AI and biometrics is both responsible and cutting-edge.
Reliance High-Tech’s CEO, Ali Enser, praised Schofield’s appointment: “I congratulate Andy on his new role. His credentials are second to none and reflect our focus on leveraging AI to provide value beyond security alone. I have absolute confidence that, under his stewardship, the AI and Biometrics group will take significant steps that will help shape the future of the industry.”
Schofield’s first meeting as chair took place on 2nd October and addressed several high-priority topics, including AI standardisation and a review of the BSIA’s facial recognition technology guide. With Schofield at the helm, the group aims to build on its achievements and continue to influence the responsible use of these transformative technologies across the UK and beyond.
