Skills for Security’s Careers Fair Sparks Interest in Industry Opportunities

by Geny Caloisi

Skills for Security is celebrating the success of its first dedicated careers fair, held at The Bescot Stadium Locker Room near its Walsall training centre. Designed to introduce young people to career opportunities in the fire and security industry, the event attracted school leavers, educators, and industry professionals.

As the first careers fair focused solely on the fire and security sector, the event provided students aged 14 to 18 with direct access to potential career pathways. Attendees engaged with employers explored apprenticeship opportunities and gained insights into the latest industry developments.

David Scott, Managing Director of Skills for Security (pictured), reflected on the event’s impact: “We asked, and the industry responded. The overwhelming support from sponsors and participants highlights the enthusiasm of young people when presented with clear career opportunities. This sector offers long-term, rewarding careers, and this event has been instrumental in showcasing those prospects. Seeing students, teachers, and employers engaging in meaningful conversations has been truly inspiring.”

Skills for Security, the UK’s leading provider of fire and security apprenticeships, organised the fair to help address the industry’s skills gap. By providing hands-on insights into apprenticeship routes and career prospects, the event aimed to encourage young people to consider roles in the sector.

The fair featured industry-leading sponsors and keynote speakers, including a talk from Steve Riley, Division Director at Comelit-PAC, on workplace inclusivity. Exhibitors such as Ajax, CSL, Fenix Monitoring, HKC, Orisec, RISCO, Pyronix, HID Global, Honeywell, and others were present to offer career guidance, CV support, and insights into the latest technological advancements. Attendees also had the chance to connect with employers and explore live apprenticeship vacancies.

Beyond benefiting students, the event provided teachers and career advisors with a deeper understanding of career opportunities in fire and security, equipping them to better guide their students.

Following the event’s success, Skills for Security is already planning future careers fairs to continue supporting young people in their career journeys. “We remain committed to raising awareness of opportunities within the fire and security sector and ensuring the next generation has the skills and knowledge needed to thrive,” Scott concluded.
