Third Millennium, part of HID, has launched a pair of multi-technology readers designed to eliminate the need for separate staff and visitor devices at entry points.
The new RXQR and RXQRK units combine high-security RFID card reading with QR code scanning in a single device. The RXQRK adds a keypad for PIN verification where two-factor authentication is required, such as in data centres or multi-tenanted sites.
The move reflects a clear shift in access habits. “QR codes have been around for years, but their use in access control really took off during the pandemic,” says Steve Greenaway, Business Development Manager at Third Millennium. “Organisations with fewer staffed receptions needed a simple, contact-free way to manage temporary access – and QR codes are cost-effective and easy to issue.”
One reader instead of two
Until now, many organisations have fitted separate readers side by side: one for employees’ RFID cards, another for contractor or visitor QR codes. That has meant twice the hardware, dual cabling and additional maintenance.
The RXQR range removes that duplication. A single reader handles employee and visitor credentials and connects using existing protocols including Clock and Data, Wiegand and OSDP. Both models support MIFARE Classic, MIFARE DESFire and LEGIC, making them compatible with modern open-standard smartcard systems.
“It’s a simple concept offering huge efficiency and financial gains,” Greenaway adds. “You’re halving the number of devices, halving the installation work and simplifying ongoing maintenance.”
Designed for real-world access needs
The units retain Third Millennium’s minimalist design with blue LED indicators and are intended to work within existing infrastructure, avoiding the need to replace door controllers.
QR credentials remain especially useful for contractors and visitors. Unlike mobile credentials tied to app licences, QR codes can be generated directly by many access control platforms, cost virtually nothing to issue and don’t require downloads or user accounts.
For organisations modernising access control without wholesale replacement, the RXQR range offers a cleaner, more efficient route, and fewer devices on the wall.
