Fiftytwo modernises in-store POS with Avassa Edge Platform

by Geny Caloisi

Retail software provider Fiftytwo has selected the Avassa Edge Platform to manage and orchestrate its in-store point-of-sale (POS) applications, bringing automation, resilience and central control to the edge environments of its retail stores.

With a heritage in delivering modular and flexible in-store solutions, Fiftytwo supports mid-sized to large retailers with estates ranging from a handful of locations to several thousand. Their POS platform is designed as a suite of services tailored to each retailer’s needs, whether deployed on customer-owned hardware or on devices sourced through Fiftytwo.

As demand grows for rapid feature delivery, fast resolution times and seamless customer experiences, Fiftytwo recognised the need for a more automated and scalable approach to application lifecycle management. The company turned to Avassa to strengthen its edge operations—without sacrificing the local performance retailers depend on.

Fiftytwo CTO Peder Herborg said the move was a natural evolution for a company already rooted in edge-native thinking. “We’ve been doing what’s now referred to as edge computing for a long time. What’s changing is how we operate it. With containers, secret management, orchestration and monitoring, we’re now able to manage the POS platform in a fully automated way.”

By integrating Avassa, Fiftytwo can now treat in-store software much like cloud-native services—centrally orchestrated, continuously updated, and operationally consistent across different environments. This shift ensures store uptime even in locations with unreliable connectivity, while enabling rapid rollouts, observability, and rollback capabilities when needed.

Herborg explained that their priority is not just delivering great software, but owning the full lifecycle. “Our customer experience is our longstanding pride, and we want to be responsible for the platform from deployment to update to support. The market today expects faster innovation without compromising stability, and that sets new demands on the infrastructure we use.”

Avassa’s edge platform allows Fiftytwo to maintain full visibility and control over distributed store environments, supporting mixed operating systems and hardware. Key features include central secrets management, remote deployments, automated rollbacks and robust monitoring across services.

According to Herborg, Avassa stood out both technically and commercially. “It complements our strengths and lets us focus on our core product. We don’t want to spend time building tooling—we want to deliver secure, resilient retail experiences at scale.”

The partnership with Avassa gives Fiftytwo an edge in delivering offline-resilient, fully managed POS systems that are easier to deploy, easier to maintain, and faster to evolve.

Avassa’s Head of Sales, Urban Lindegren, said: “Fiftytwo understands the complexity of in-store systems better than most. They’re a perfect match for our platform, and we’re proud to support their continued growth.”
