Industry Insights from The Security Event 2025

From 8–10 April, the NEC Birmingham hosted The Security Event 2025, reaffirming its place as a key gathering for the UK’s physical security community. Part of the broader Safety & Security Event Series, it drew manufacturers, integrators, specifiers, and end-users from across the UK and further afield.

The event built on strong momentum from previous years, including a record-breaking 16,496 security professionals. The show floor covered a wide range of technologies—from surveillance and access control to intrusion detection, cloud platforms, and AI-driven tools. Off the floor, a focused programme of talks and training offered attendees a chance to explore career development, industry trends, and emerging best practice.


Next-Gen Talent on Display

Apprentices development took centre stage again, led by Skills for Security. The team brought together 36 young engineers from around the UK to compete in a live, hands-on installation challenge. Over three days, competitors were judged on speed, attention to detail, and teamwork as they installed security systems under pressure.

This year also featured the Skills for Security National Qualifiers—a stepping stone to WorldSkills UK. These qualifiers highlighted the technical and soft skills emerging in the fire and security sectors. For employers, it was a chance to witness future-ready engineering talent in action and get a closer look at how formal training translates into real-world capability.


From AI to Cloud-Ready Systems

Many of the sector’s leading manufacturers used the event to showcase product launches and strategic direction, with a clear emphasis on AI, cloud integration, and modular scalability.

Hanwha Vision unveiled its latest AI-powered IP camera line, featuring video analytics for proactive threat detection and business intelligence. Central to this push was the Wisenet 9—Hanwha’s most advanced System on a Chip yet. Built with a dual Neural Processing Unit (NPU) architecture, it splits image processing and object detection for better performance and smarter analytics at the edge.

i-PRO debuted its new U-Series cameras in the UK—bringing AI analytics to entry-level systems. With models supporting up to 4K resolution and features like loitering and directional monitoring, the range caters to budget-sensitive projects without compromising on function. Notably, the U-Series achieved FIPS 140-3 Level 3 compliance, raising the bar for cybersecurity in entry-tier hardware.

HID previewed HID Amico™, a biometric access control system based on NIST-tested facial recognition. With five authentication methods—including facial recognition, card, PIN, QR code, and mobile—it’s designed for fast, flexible access in high-traffic environments. By storing biometric templates on the card rather than in centralised databases, HID put privacy at the forefront. Launch is expected later in 2025.

HID also showed the OMNIKEY SE Plug—a compact USB-C reader for multi-factor authentication (MFA) across laptops, tablets, and smartphones. Tailored for mobile professionals in sectors like healthcare and policing, the tool supports secure access to both physical and digital environments.

Genetec leaned into a ‘back to basics’ message, focusing on how enhancements to Security Center and Mission Control improve unified operations. Their updates aimed to streamline access control, video surveillance, and incident management—particularly for critical infrastructure and enterprise sites.


New Sensors, Smart Panels, and Scalable Systems

Takex brought its new VS-1000E Vape and Smoking Sensor, aimed at schools and public spaces. The sensor uses high-sensitivity particle detection and sound/LED alerts to flag vaping or smoking in real time. It’s quick to install and doesn’t require an app or licence—keeping things simple for users.

Takex also previewed the MW-100AH Microwave Sensor for perimeter intrusion detection. With dual-frequency support, it handles multiple units along long perimeters without interference. Crucially, it works in challenging conditions—fog, rain, snow—and even through walls. Unlike PIR sensors, it can detect still bodies, adding an extra layer of coverage in static threat scenarios.

Pyronix introduced the Enforcer X280, a control panel aimed at commercial and high-end residential installations. It also launched Guard Response, a mobile app that lets end-users request private security on demand—tapping into the trend for app-based protection services.

Ajax Systems showcased a robust update to its wireless security ecosystem. Highlights included the MotionCam Outdoor (PhOD), the LifeQuality indoor air monitor, and new fire safety and automation devices such as FireProtect 2 and Relay Plus. Ajax focused on integration—demonstrating how their systems support seamless connectivity with third-party automation tools and ARC infrastructure. Updates to the Ajax Translator software further streamlined this compatibility.


Unified Platforms and Seamless Migration

Gallagher Security focused on system migration and mobile credentialing. The new QuickSwitch tool simplifies the move from legacy setups to the Gallagher Command Centre. Version 9.30 of the Command Centre itself added stronger remote support for critical infrastructure sites. Also featured was the C7000 Enhanced Controller, built for resilience in high-security settings.

Gallagher also drew interest with its integration of employee badges into Apple Wallet via the Gallagher Mobile Connect app—part of the industry’s move toward secure, contactless access. Its perimeter offerings rounded out a strong showing for organisations managing complex or high-risk environments.

PACOM spotlighted VIGIL CORE, a cloud-native platform unifying access control, intrusion detection, and alarm monitoring. Designed for operational and security teams alike, it supports system convergence while remaining open to third-party integration—key for managing hybrid estates.

3xLOGIC, PACOM’s sister brand, showed off enhancements to VIGIL 13, adding ANPR, anti-loitering detection, and improved analytics filtering to speed up incident response. These tools are tailored to reduce operator fatigue and support sectors like retail, education, and critical infrastructure.


Biometric Access and Intelligent Audio Integration

Suprema returned to The Security Event with a strong focus on biometric innovation, showcasing the BioStar 2 access control platform and its flagship terminal, the BioStation 3. Designed to support multimodal authentication—including facial recognition, fingerprint, QR codes, and mobile access—BioStation 3 reflects the demand for contactless, high-assurance identity management. Suprema’s unified approach via BioStar 2 also appealed to integrators looking for scalable, centrally managed solutions that balance security, convenience, and privacy.

Japanese audio specialist TOA demonstrated how sound can play a powerful role in security strategies. The company showcased its range of IP horn speakers, emphasising how they can be integrated with CCTV systems to deliver real-time audio intervention. By enabling operators to issue live or automated warnings, TOA’s solutions help deter crime as it happens—particularly in open or high-risk environments like car parks, warehouses, and public spaces. The systems support PoE for streamlined deployment and central control, reinforcing the importance of voice as a proactive deterrent tool.


Mobile-First Access, Privacy-Driven Biometrics, and Contactless Innovation

Comelit-PAC stood out for its focus on mobile connectivity and unbreakable credentials. The company showcased its 4G modems, which deliver secure IP-over-air communication—removing the need for fixed infrastructure and enabling fast deployment in remote or legacy environments. Also on show was the VisionPass-SP, a facial recognition terminal built for robust, real-time biometric identification. One of the more talked-about innovations was the PAC OPS fob, designed with military-grade encryption and anti-cloning architecture. Marketed as “unhackable”, the fob aims to set a new standard for secure physical credentials in high-risk sectors.

French firm IP Door Entry echoed similar priorities. By embedding 4G SIM technology into its door entry systems, the company eliminates the need for hardwired connections—making installations quicker and more flexible, particularly in retrofit or temporary settings. The system’s smart fobs also include anti-clone protection, addressing growing concerns around credential replication in unmanaged environments.

Also representing France, STid impressed with its full suite of scalable access solutions—from Mullion-style readers to full digital face terminals. Designed for layered security, the company’s readers can be enhanced with plug-in modules for QR code scanning, fingerprint reading, and hands-free Bluetooth access. Notably, STid has taken a user-centric approach to privacy: to remain compliant with GDPR, any biometric data is stored on the user’s card, not on the reader itself—ensuring credentials remain under personal control and out of central databases.


Where Physical Security Is Heading

Across the show floor, there was a clear push for practical integration, intuitive platforms, and smart systems that can adapt to changing compliance and budget pressures. AI and cloud capabilities remain central, but the real challenge now lies in scaling them cost-effectively—and responsibly.

Biometric technologies also stood out, with a notable presence of facial recognition systems and vein readers. These tools are gaining ground in high-assurance environments, offering enhanced authentication and a seamless user experience as part of wider secure access strategies.

The Security Event 2025 highlighted three core themes driving the sector forward: workforce development, convergence of technologies, and scalable, flexible deployments. For professionals across installation, design, and strategy, these events offer a live look at where the industry is heading—and what it will take to stay ahead.
