The University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) is set for a significant security transformation after awarding a £1 million contract to North, a leading provider of smart integrated technology solutions. This ambitious project will overhaul UCLan’s existing analogue CCTV system, upgrading it to a cutting-edge hybrid cloud-based platform. With this move, the university demonstrates its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of its students and staff, while also laying the groundwork for future campus innovations.
At the heart of this transformation is technology from Genetec, making its UK debut at UCLan. The platform will unify multiple security systems into a single user-friendly interface, enhancing the way monitoring, reporting, and alarm management are conducted. Security staff will have access to real-time data and analytics, allowing for quicker response times and more effective oversight of campus activities.
The University of Central Lancashire, one of the UK’s largest higher education institutions with more than 38,000 students and staff, offers over 350 undergraduate and 200 postgraduate courses. Such a large and dynamic environment demands a robust security infrastructure, and the integration of advanced technology is seen as crucial to keeping the campus safe. By replacing around 250 analogue cameras and integrating them with existing IP CCTV units, the new system will provide comprehensive coverage across the Preston campus.
North’s hybrid cloud solution offers more than just security. The system is scalable, meaning it can grow alongside the university’s future needs, and its flexible architecture supports ongoing developments in smart campus initiatives. This investment aligns with UCLan’s long-term goals of enhancing campus security while embracing sustainability and innovation in its infrastructure.
The project is scheduled to begin in September 2024, with full deployment of the upgraded system expected by February 2025. Once completed, the university will have a resilient, future-proof security framework that can integrate seamlessly with other technologies. This transformation marks a key step toward UCLan’s vision of becoming a smarter, safer, and more efficient campus environment.
Andrew Foster, Managing Director – Public Services at North, emphasised the significance of this contract: “This project not only highlights the importance of advanced security systems in today’s educational environments but also marks the first UK deployment of this innovative technology. It’s a major milestone that will set the standard for smart campuses across the UK.”
Paul Clayton, Senior Building Surveyor at UCLan, added: “Our investment in smart technology reflects our commitment to providing the best possible experience for students and staff. This security upgrade is a vital part of that, enhancing safety on campus while supporting our broader ambition to evolve into a smarter, more technology-driven university.”
As UCLan continues its journey toward becoming a smart campus, this partnership with North represents a key strategic move in integrating technology into the fabric of university life. By prioritising safety and sustainability, the university is poised to lead the way in transforming higher education through innovative security solutions.
