Discover why cybersecurity is a hot topic for the security industry

by Geny Caloisi

On our latest webinar, System Q’s Managing Director, Mike Isherwood, shared his insights on the evolving landscape of cybersecurity. Isherwood’s diverse business background spans IT distribution, telecommunications, and security, bringing a wealth of experience to the table. His career highlights include being part of BT Business’s 21CN team and developing Home Office ESN-compliant software, showcasing his expertise in advanced mobile and telecoms infrastructure.

Isherwood (pictured), a Cisco Certified Specialist with a strong foundation in IT infrastructure, networking, and security, has also made significant contributions to software, hardware, and firmware development. His academic pursuits demonstrate a commitment to continuous learning, with multiple certifications from MIT in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, Technology Strategy, Innovation, and Organisational Design, culminating in an MIT Executive Certificate in Strategy & Innovation. His studies for an Executive MBA at Hull University further enhanced his strategic leadership capabilities.

Cyber Threats and why should we care

The webinar covered an extensive range of topics, beginning with the latest cyber threats and progressing to global standards, including comparing various standards and programs.

Isherwood delved into the current landscape of cyber threats, including zero-day exploits (exploiting a software vulnerability unknown to the software’s developer or the public) and CCTV hacks, providing a comprehensive understanding of these pressing issues.

He examined global cybersecurity standards, highlighting how they compare and the importance of trust and the supply chain in cybersecurity. Three main areas were addressed in detail: UL cybersecurity assurance, NDAA compliance—and why it does apply to the EU and the UK—and the UK PSTI Act.

The discussion addressed the potential risks and challenges of integrating AI into existing security systems. While AI can significantly enhance functionality, it also introduces new vulnerabilities. Most cyber-attacks today are aimed at corporate espionage rather than ransomware, making it crucial to secure AI-integrated systems. The UK is at the forefront of ethical AI standards, with institutions like the Bristol Robotics Lab leading the way.

Isherwood also introduced System Q as a solutions provider and not just a ‘box shifting distributor.’ He believes that with the company’s expertise, customer support, and training, System Q can play a role in bridging the gap between the IT and security industries. This section was particularly insightful, as he elaborated on System Q’s expertise in developing secure software and hardware, particularly IoT devices, and how the company’s new ownership is driving a strong focus on cybersecurity.

Partnerships that foster a safer future

A significant highlight of the webinar was the introduction of System Q’s new partner, TVT, which enhances its offerings in the security market.

Attendees were also offered a comprehensive PDF with detailed information from the webinar, providing valuable resources to reinforce the topics discussed.

Furthermore, Isherwood discussed real-world examples of unsecured cameras and their vulnerabilities, underscoring the critical need for robust cybersecurity measures.

Isherwood stressed the importance of robust cybersecurity practices, including regular updates, network monitoring, and advanced security solutions to mitigate such threats.

The discussion also touched upon the rise of CCTV hacks and the sophisticated methods employed by cybercriminals to exploit home and commercial surveillance systems. Emphasising the need for integrated cybersecurity measures at both the hardware and software levels, Isherwood advocated for proactive defences and highlighted initiatives like the UK’s Digital Security by Design (DSbD) to promote better product security.

The webinar underscored the need for continuous learning and adaptation in the face of evolving cyber threats, emphasising the critical role of innovation and strategic planning in safeguarding digital infrastructures. Introducing System Q’s new partner, TVT, and the comprehensive resources provided, such as the PDF giveaway, offered attendees practical tools and knowledge to enhance their cybersecurity measures.
