Axis Communications celebrates its 40th anniversary

by Geny Caloisi
Axis Communications celebrates its 40th anniversary by emphasising its commitment to sustainability, which is highlighted in its 2023 Sustainability Report. The company, known for pioneering the shift from analogue to digital surveillance, has had its CO₂e reduction targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). Since its founding in 1984, Axis has introduced innovations such as the world’s first network camera and AI-powered solutions.

“Reaching this significant anniversary is a testament to our relentless commitment to innovation and pursuit of quality,” said Verena Rathjen, VP of EMEA of Axis Communications. “But this is not just about celebrating the past 40 years of achievements; it is also about demonstrating our uncompromising commitment to realising over the years and decades to come our sustainability goals. Collectively, the scope of these initiatives means every aspect of our business – from the raw materials used in component manufacturing to energy consumption and the approach to recycling products at their end-of-life – will need to demonstrably contribute to the achievement of emissions reduction targets. Put simply, we are committed to our sustainability agenda to ensure the next 40 years are as rewarding as the last.”

Axis has been aligned with the UN Global Compact since 2007 and supports the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the UN 2030 Agenda. The 2023 Sustainability Report, following the GRI Standards, highlights progress in human rights due diligence, energy management, use of renewable materials, and anti-corruption training.

The SBTi has approved Axis’s ambitious targets to reduce scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2030, and scope 3 emissions by 51.6% per sold unit from a 2022 base year. Carl Trotzig, Director of Environment & Supply Chain Sustainability, affirms that these science-based targets align with Axis’s long-term commitment to environmental impact reduction.

Rathjen concludes, “Axis has, from its inception, strived to create groundbreaking products, to get the most from network technology, and to build upon a foundation of strong core values which put its customers first. We may only have coined the term ‘Innovating for a smarter, safer world’ in 2013, but this has defined the company’s vision from the outset: Axis has spent the past 40 years learning, discovering new innovations to make its products, technology, and relationships stronger. We look forward to continuing our mission of innovating for a smarter, safer world.”
