Empowering Responsible AI: A Conversation with i-PRO’s Gerard Figols

by Geny Caloisi

The discourse is shifting in the field of artificial intelligence (AI), where innovation converges with responsibility. No longer is AI merely a buzzword or a realm of technological prowess; it’s evident that it needs to evolve into a domain of ethical considerations and conscientious decision-making. At the forefront of this evolution stands i-PRO, a leading company in the AI landscape, championing responsible AI as the new imperative. What sets i-PRO apart is its unique approach, which combines technological advancement with a deep understanding of ethical principles, making it a pioneer in the field.

In a candid interview with Gerard Figols, Senior Vice President of i-PRO and President at i-PRO EMEA and APAC, we delved into the company’s philosophy and approach towards responsible AI. Figols articulated i-PRO’s commitment to fostering a deeper understanding and implementation of ethical principles within AI, encapsulating its ethos in seven fundamental principles.

“At i-PRO, we recognise that AI is not a monolithic entity but a dynamic force with immense potential and profound implications,” Figols remarked. “Our seven principles for AI underscore the necessity of transitioning from mere AI discourse to responsible AI discourse.”

The i-PRO Ethical Principles for AI are not just theoretical guidelines; they are practical tools for all employees engaged in using, researching, and developing AI products and services. These principles aim to balance technological advancement with social responsibility and ethical considerations. For instance, they include prioritising the safety and security of society, respecting human dignity and fundamental rights, promoting transparency and fairness, safeguarding privacy, providing comprehensive training on AI ethics, fostering cooperation with stakeholders, and ensuring the provision of safe products and services. i-PRO is dedicated to continuously updating these principles to keep pace with advancements in AI technology and changing social dynamics, ensuring they remain relevant and effective.

Central to i-PRO’s perspective is the acknowledgement that ethical considerations in AI are multifaceted and context-dependent. Figols emphasised the influence of culture, country-specific nuances, and local laws and regulations in shaping ethical frameworks. While i-PRO refrains from imposing rigid rules, it aspires to spearhead ethical contemplation and empower users to navigate AI with integrity and discernment.

“We understand that ethical standards cannot be uniformly imposed across diverse contexts,” Figols elucidated. “Instead, we aim to catalyse critical conversations and provide users with the tools to imbue AI with ethical sensibilities that align with their unique circumstances.”

i-PRO’s vision transcends passive adherence to predefined ethical norms; it advocates for proactive engagement and informed decision-making. By equipping users with the knowledge and resources to impart ethical guidance to AI systems, i-PRO fosters a culture of ethical stewardship and accountability.

“Informed decisions lie at the heart of Ethical AI,” Figols affirmed. We endeavour to empower users to shape AI according to their values, thereby ensuring ethical integrity and societal benefit.”

Indeed, i-PRO’s stance on responsible AI reflects a paradigm shift in the AI landscape, a shift from mere technological advancement to conscientious innovation.

In line with its commitment to responsible AI, i-PRO adheres to ethical principles and embodies them in concrete practices, particularly in the realm of security. Figols delineated several vital pointers that underscore i-PRO’s approach to the ‘AI-ification’ of the security industry. These include minimal data collection, anonymisation of data at its source through techniques such as redaction at the edge, encryption of data at the edge to ensure security and privacy, and adherence to stringent data retention policies. By adopting these measures, i-PRO ensures a transparent processing of the end-to-end data ecosystem, prioritising privacy, security, and ethical integrity.

Keeping people at the forefront of AI

Figols underscored the indispensable role of human-centricity in AI deployment. “Users must focus on people, employees, and partners, and provide the right training,he asserted. If you dehumanise the process, it loses its meaning.” This emphasis on human-centred AI underscores i-PRO’s commitment to ethical considerations that prioritise the welfare and dignity of individuals within the AI ecosystem, making you, our audience, feel valued and integral to this ecosystem.

Moreover, i-PRO recognises the imperative of addressing biases inherent in AI algorithms to ensure transparency and accuracy. By enabling algorithms to identify and allocate potential biases, i-PRO promotes ethical integrity and equitable outcomes in AI-driven processes.

In December 2023, the European Union introduced the AI Act, a landmark legislation regulating AI systems’ development and deployment within the EU. This comprehensive framework delineates rules and requirements governing various aspects of AI, including data governance, transparency, accountability, and mitigating biases. i-PRO’s adherence to ethical principles aligns seamlessly with the objectives outlined in the EU AI Act, underscoring its proactive stance towards regulatory compliance and ethical integrity.

It’s noteworthy that, at this juncture, security cameras do not possess generative AI capabilities. This might come in the near future but for now, AI only interprets data in accordance with its programming.

As AI continues to evolve, i-PRO remains steadfast in its commitment to responsible AI, advocating for responsible innovation that upholds transparency, accountability, and human-centricity principles. In doing so, i-PRO navigates the complexities of the AI landscape and paves the way toward a future where technological advancement converges harmoniously with ethical integrity.
